Choosing a course
- Look for a named editing pathway if you're sure you want to edit. General filmmaking degrees spread time across every role.
- Ask about edit suite access outside timetabled hours. Cutting time is how you get good.
- Check for Avid certification if you're aiming at film and TV drama. Avid Learning Partner universities can certify you as part of the course.
- Look for the ScreenSkills Select mark, which recognises courses with strong industry links.
- Watch graduates' work, not the prospectus. Most courses publish showcase films.

Frequently asked questions

Degrees dedicated to editing include the NFTS MFA Editing, the University of York's MA Editing for Film and Television Production, Bournemouth University's MA Post Production Editing, Goldsmiths' MA Filmmaking (Editing), the University of South Wales's MA Film (Editing), and BAs in post-production at Ravensbourne, Solent, Portsmouth and boomsatsuma in Bristol.
Can I study video editing at college in the UK?+
Yes. Many further education colleges offer two-year Level 3 courses in film, TV or creative media production, such as BTEC and UAL Extended Diplomas and the Media, Broadcast and Production T Level. In Scotland, HNDs in television and film are common.
Do I need a degree to become a video editor in the UK?+

Of the UK courses we checked that name their software, 69% name Premiere Pro or Adobe Creative Cloud, 67% DaVinci Resolve, 64% Avid Media Composer and 15% Final Cut Pro. Most teach more than one.
